About the Role
We are seeking a cell culture technician to support the Queen Mary+Emulate Organs-on-chips Centre. The role will involve supporting experiments conducted by users of the Centre in order to generate high quality research data. The technician will be required to work with the Emulate organ-chip platform, culturing a variety of different cell types and maintaining them within the organ-chips. Activities will include performing cell culture, microscopy and image analysis and preparing samples for molecular biology and biochemical assays. The technician will be responsible for lab management activities including; cleaning incubators, culture hoods and other equipment, preparing reagents, completing risk assessment and standard operating procedures and maintaining laboratory log books other paperwork. The technician will be required to interact with Centre users and may provide practical training in using the organ-chips in association with our lead Centre Scientist and Manager.
About You
The nature of the work requires outstanding cell culture technique and organisational skills. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of high quality mammalian cell culture experience and the ability to perform laboratory tasks in a well-organised and systematic manner, maintaining sterility where necessary and keeping appropriate records. The successful candidate will also need to have excellent people skills being able to interact with Centre staff and researchers.
About the School/Department
The technician will be based in the Queen Mary+Emulate Organs-on-chips Centre, which is housed within the School of Engineering and Materials Science. The Centre provides access to the state-of-the-art organ-chip technology provided by Emulate Inc., allowing researchers from across the UK to use the existing, supported organ-chip models (e.g. liver, kidney, intestine) as well as develop new models. The School of Engineering and Materials Science is a large multidisciplinary department with 80-90 academic staff and 40-50 technical and professional services staff.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is full time (35 hours/week), fixed term appointment for 1 year, with an expected start date by 1st August 2021. The starting salary will be Grade 3, in the range of £27,742 - £32,454 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
