Mechanical forces are fundamental regulators of cell behaviour, tissue function and disease progression, yet they remain largely absent from conventional in vitro models. In this seminar, I will present our recent work on engineering mechanically defined human microphysiological systems that recreate key aspects of the tissue microenvironment. I will discuss applications ranging from myelination and neurodegenerative disease to vascular biology, and show how incorporating tissue mechanics can reveal new biological mechanisms, improve disease modelling and enhance the predictive power of drug discovery platforms.=0D=0A=

Prof. Emad Moeendarbary is Professor of Cell Mechanics and Mechanobiology in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University College London. His research combines engineering, physics, and cell biology to develop microphysiological systems and mechanobiology-based technologies to study tissue repair, neurodegeneration, and regenerative medicine. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and is the founder of BioRecode Ltd, a biotechnology company translating advances in mechanobiology into innovative research tools and drug discovery platforms, with a particular focus on neurodegenerative diseases.=0D=0A=
